North Channel Wind
North Channel Wind
North Channel Wind is off the east coast of Northern Ireland. The projects, (North Channel Wind 1 & 2), will be located between 9 and 25 km from shore in approximately 120m of water depth.
North Channel Wind is at the Scoping stage of development. This gives us the opportunity to consult with local communities and wider stakeholders during the design stage in order to develop the most suitable and appropriate proposals possible. In this way we are confident that the project can harness the immense power of offshore wind whilst achieving a balance in terms of marine use, coastlines and seascape.
We are currently planning surveys to inform the final project design and assess potential impacts. The size and layout of the project will evolve as the consultation and environmental assessment process progresses.
North Channel Wind 1
NCW 1 is at the site characterization and optimisation stage, the size of the project will of course change over time in response to new information and as a result of consultation. Therefore it may increase or decrease in size from this initial estimate. The site boundary is preliminary.
Location- Off the east coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Distance from Shore
- The proposed turbines are between 9 and 25 km (nearest to furthest) from shore
Development stage
- Site characterisation and optimisation
- Environmental scoping
- Stakeholder engagement
- Long-lead environmental surveys, including digital aerial surveys, engineering surveys, including wind and resource assessment.
- Initial public consultation (2023)
Proposed turbine heights
- Up to 325m tip height

North Channel Wind 2
NCW 2 is at the site characterization and optimisation stage, the size of the project will of course change over time in response to new information and as a result of consultation. Therefore it may increase or decrease in size from this initial estimate. The site boundary is preliminary.

About North Channel Wind
North Channel Wind is a wholly owned subsidiary of SBM Offshore and the front end development work is being carried out by NMK Renewables Limited. SBM Offshore is a global market leader in floating offshore solutions for the energy industry, including an innovative tension leg platform foundation for floating offshore wind. NMK Renewables is a niche project development company focused on delivering floating offshore wind projects in the UK and Ireland.
We focus on developing innovative solutions backed up by the reliability that only an experienced player in the offshore energy market with unrivalled expertise in developing, installing and operating floating solutions can provide.
Why it’s better
NSBM Offshore has designed a floating platform that offers the best performance for the wind turbine and at the lowest impact to the environment with a small seabed footprint. The platform has exceptional wind turbine stability and floater motion.
The floater is designed so that there is no need to adapt the turbine control strategy to sure optimum power curve and higher availability. The floater is adaptable and scalable to various wind turbine models which enables faster execution planning and fewer integration loops.
The SBM Offshore floating solution is ideally suited for Northern Ireland which has a limited seabed and many environmental constraints.
The People
The SBM Offshore team brings their engineering, technical and EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation) skills to the project. SBM Offshore is also supporting with procurement, finance, health and safety, legal and compliance.
Our highly experienced people bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the project.
The NMK Renewables team is carrying out the front-end development work including:
- Land acquisition
- Consenting and planning
- Grid planning and design
- Stakeholder engagement
- Site characterisationProject rights
“By aligning our team’s collective expertise in project development, environmental management, and engineering, NMK plays a significant role in driving the global transition to renewable energy.”
